A very common mechanism of injury to the ankle is rolling your ankle.
This could be caused by changing direction playing sport or just walking on a uneven surface down a garden path. This causes a sprain or a strain of either the ligaments or muscles around your ankle.
With these injuries it is critical to regain normal range of movement. Once a ligament is stretched it loses some of the joints spatial awareness (proprioception) and without retraining this, its is probable you will reinjure that ligament.
